  • http://blog.fidmmuseum.org/museum/2009/08/louella-ballerino.html FIDM Museum Blog: Louella Ballerino - Louella Ballerino? Who's that? Though you may not recognize her name, her design sensibility was crucial to the creation and popularization of the California look--casual, functional, colorful clothing designed to complement the relaxed California lifestyle. Her career began in 1929, when economic necessity led Ballerino to begin work as a free-lance fashion illustrator in Los Angeles. She also held a full-time position in a custom dress shop and taught evening fashion design courses at a technical college. She worked behind the scenes until 1938, when a manufacturer, who had asked for something "different," rejected her sketch for a peasant-style dress....

FIDM Museum Newsletter Editor Elizabeth Hinckley reached out to a few designers for an informal roundtable discussion about the challenges and joys of creating television costumes. Is there something in particular that you want visitors to know, understand, or appreciate about your costumes for your show? It takes a profoundly generous spirit to then pass that collection on so that more people can enjoy them. Mona Lee Nesseth, a Graduate Gemologist, custom jewelry designer, and antique and estate jewelry expert, made a truly graceful gift when she bestowed her exquisite collection of hand fans to the FIDM Museum & Galleries, which are now showcased in the current exhibition, A Graceful Gift: Fans From The Mona Lee Nesseth Collection. The exhibition is open for one more month - make sure you catch it...

  • http://blog.fidmmuseum.org/museum/2016/09/thom-browne.html FIDM Museum Blog: Thom Browne - “Everyone told me my clothes didn’t fit, even my friends.”[1] So says celebrated designer Thom Browne, whose name is synonymous with the shrunken suit tailoring that has become the standout menswear trend of the past decade. Though he is now considered a darling of the fashion industry, his unusual take on classic tailoring was initially met with resistance. But Browne knew there was a market for his designs – he envisioned “the businessman who wants to look both conservative and cool,”[2] and transformed his personal style into a successful global label.
